The deadline to switch was 31 August 2026. If you missed it, your money is still safe, but your old Gold Card will not work at ATMs or stores until you collect your new Black Card.
The card switch is 100% free. You do not need to visit a SASSA office.
Step 1: Find a card replacement site
Postbank has set up card switch points inside these stores: Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Spar.
To find your closest site, dial *120*355# on your phone.
Step 2: Bring your South African ID
Bring your original ID: a Green ID Book, a Smart ID Card, or a valid Temporary ID Certificate from Home Affairs.
Step 3: Get your new card
- The store agent scans your ID and links it to your new card using your fingerprints.
- Any money on your old Gold Card moves automatically to the new Black Card.
- The new card works immediately — no forms to fill in.
- You can collect your card at any store in any province, no matter where you first applied.
The card replacement is completely free. Never tell anyone your PIN or the 3-digit CVV number on the back of your card — not even a Postbank agent.
