How to check your SASSA balance for free

Three easy ways to check your grant balance before you travel to the store or ATM.

Method 1: USSD code (free, no data needed)

  1. Dial *120*69277# on your phone.
  2. Choose your preferred language.
  3. Follow the prompts on screen.
  4. Your balance shows on screen, or you'll get it by text message.

If your grant is paid into a Postbank account, you can also dial *120*3210#.

Method 2: SMS balance check (Postbank Black Card)

This method costs R1 per SMS, and only works if you use the cellphone number registered on your Postbank account.

  1. Open your messages app.
  2. Type BAL, then a space, then the last 4 digits of your account number (not your card number).
  3. Example: if your account ends in 5678, type: BAL 5678
  4. Send it to 32302.
  5. Wait for the reply with your balance.

Method 3: SASSA WhatsApp bot (needs a little data)

  1. Save the SASSA WhatsApp number: 082 601 0111.
  2. Open WhatsApp and send the word "status" or "balance".
  3. Follow the automatic steps shown in the chat.

Never send your full card number, account number, or PIN by SMS or chat. Cover the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN at an ATM or till.
